Hi all, I have got my parents here at the moment so barely get to come and blog. Its been a year now since we had our pregnancy loss... and heaps has happened since then, the week of the year anniversary was really hard, I found myself thinking about it all a lot, I am ok with it but it was hard.
I also realise that it was meant to be, and that N was to be our 4th child, shes absolutely awesome, shes three months this week and is a huge delight to us all.
We have been busy doing kids triathlons, the two big girls are doing really well and have had their photos in the local papers 3 times because of it. I managed to do a small triathlon on Valentines day which was a huge thing for me, I haven't done a tri since early last year because of pregnancy etc so it was neat to achieve something like that again.
Its great having Mum and Dad up for a while, they were here for a week, then did car rallies then came back to us for this week, the kids think its great and they are loving having the summer car here too.
so thats pretty much all thats going on at the moment, I will try to become a more regular writer again soon.

Sorry I haven't been blogging lately, I have been too tired and too busy, Its school holidays and having four kids takes up lots of time :) not that its a bad thing it just means that blogging isn't important at the moment.
N is 7 weeks now, she is just lovely, she smiles and is beginning to make neat noises other than crying, the girls are great with her, K even changes nappies which is very cool. O isn't so sure about her but calls her baby and gives her hugs and kisses.
Ben is spending a lot of time writing his PhD, I am over it at the moment and just want to see the damn thing finished, I am sure it will be worth it once its done but at the moment its just hard slog for him and tiring for both of us.
I have managed to start riding my bike again, I can do 5km in around 15 minutes which is good, I am wanting to get up to 20km to do the tour de manawatu later this year, The two big girls did their first triathlon of the season on Sunday, it was great, a friends 15 year old did it with L and I did it with K, I wasn't able to walk/run with her so I biked beside her instead (my hips are still too sore for walking far, biking is easier as its a lot lower impact)
My weight loss plan for the year is still happening, I haven't gained any extra which is good, just need to drink more water and keep up the exercise.

Happy New year..... 2010 is here

I can remember seeing in the start of the millennium with two of my fave fellas listening to Dave Dobbyn playing in Hagley park with heaps of other cantabs. It was awesome, we were seeing in the new millennium and it was going to be huge....
Well its now 10 years in and in that time I graduated from University, completed a graduate diploma in teaching and learning, shifted from Christchurch to Palmerston North, we bought our first house and most importantly we became parents to four fabulous children that bring us huge amounts of happiness. I have also had two serious bouts of depression the second one meant that I lived with our children in Oamaru with my parents for a year, and have recovered from both to be a productive member of my family again. We have been politically active in the Labour party, I have held a position on New Zealand Council of the party and Ben has been a very active member of the environmental policy committee.
Ben has started and nearly completed his PhD. Its taken over 5 years so far and hes hoping to be finished in February. Its going to be a stressful 9 weeks or so as hes only able to do it in his spare time.
I don't really know what the next ten years will bring, but by this time in 2020 we will have two teenage girls, our youngest child will be 10. I will hopefully be working again in some capacity as something, but at the moment I aren't really sure what. Its all an adventure just waiting for us really.
But at the moment I am thinking of what I want to achieve in 2010, my first goal is to maintain my mental health, I am doing ok, and I want to stay this way, I also want to improve my physical health, I am many kg overweight and I plan to lose 10kg of that this year, its not a huge goal but will take me some time and dedication to do it. I want to be able to keep up better with the children too, so I am hoping to increase my fitness. I want to sew more clothes for the kids, and I want to continue breastfeeding N till she turns 1 at least.
Miss L will start school this year and O will start afternoon kindy too. I would like to get our living room wallpapered and maybe do up one of the children's rooms or the kitchen.
I aren't sure that I will be politically active, but then it depends on if a decent left wing candidate goes for the mayoralty, then I may do something, I still want to do triathlons, and want to be able to run a bit further than I currently am able.
Overall I am hoping that 2010 is a good year for my family and friends and that we all enjoy some success at whatever our goals are.

sunburnt and tired

I helped out as a Marshall today at the Weetbix kids Tryathlon, it was awesome, there were over 1250 entries from 7 to 15 years of age.
This was the first time I had been to one of these events, its only the second year they have run one in Palmy. It was amazing, the kids looked like they were having a great time and its really neat seeing a wide range of children out there having a go at something different.
I was on a street intersection making sure cars didn't run the competitors over, it was great getting to yell encouragement at the children as they biked past. I would have preferred to have had some shade though as I am now a very pink person instead of my usual white, I did have a hat and sunnies on, its just my arms and neck that are really pink.
A friends daughter looked after the two littlies she is great with them, and they just love being with her, so over all I have had a nice day,
ps I managed to make a word cloud.... yay thanks to Puerhan for pointers on how to do it

triathlon day again

yep another one done... did it a bit differently today, K ran with a friends boy, then her and I biked, then I swam for us. (she swam in the little pool). L did it, she ran with a friends daughter, then biked beside her godmother who was pushing O in the pram. Ben did his first medium course which is 3.5km run (which he did with no stops) 15km bike, and 200m swim, I was really proud of all my family as they all went out and had a great time.
Its funny how something that I started doing for me has become something that my family now do. We have the kids tri series tomorrow night, so both of the girls will be doing that. Thankfully we have friends whose children are really athletic and love helping the girls which is great for us.

Proud of my wee triathletes

the triathlon club here in Palmy is awesome, its so supportive of getting kids out there having a go. this is K's third season doing the Summer series, for her age group they run 300m, bike 600m, and swim one length of the learners pool. Its done at the pool and park next to our place which makes it easy for us to go to as well.
L did her first triathlon tonight, shes 3 so its an awesome thing that she felt confident enough to have a go. We are really proud of her too... the offical age for doing it is 4 but they let 3 year olds do it too. Her godparents daughter ran beside her for her run and bike and watched her in the pool. She was so proud of herself doing the whole thing, to top it off she won a spot prize too which was nice.
K did it without trainer wheels on her bike, this was the first time shes done anything without them, she was a bit wobbly still and fell off a couple of times, but she was so proud of herself for doing it.
We have a club tri this weekend, I will do it with K, and Ben is going to do the bike with us with the youngest two in the bike trailer, we have the events out at Linton Army camp, its great as we dont have the issues of road/traffic control that happens in town, and they have a nice 25m pool that we can use.
We are really enjoying having something that we can all do together, I wasnt in to sport as a kid, but this is a good way for me to be active and to be a role model to my children,

rugby

There is an interesting debate going on at the hand mirror over whether parents should choose what sports their children play. I have weighed into this debate because I will not be letting any of my three children play rugby at all.... I have no desire what so ever for them to play it.
I aren't anti rugby, I like watching it, I just have seen consequences of this sport that I do not like therefore i will not be letting them be involved in the sport.
A boy I went to primary school with became a tetraplegic at age 17 through no fault of his own, he was a 1st fifteen player, and was running with the ball and tackled, he fell awkwardly on hard ground and was paralysed. I don't want to see this happen to any of my children. I have seen the fractures, the blown out knees, etc, I aren't thinking this through in a sensationalist fashion.
One of my other reasons is based more on society, my cousin was from a rugby family, it was common to go to the club after work for a drink etc, He had broken up with his girlfriend, went to the club for a while, said something to someone and went home and killed himself. I am not in anyway blaming the game for his death, but the I'm a hard man attitude that goes with rugby is NZ was a factor in his death.
I am happy for my children to be competitive, social, and enjoy sport, it just wont be rugby......
When reading the comments on rugby on THM the interesting bit was that one person thought we were being a bit harsh for not letting our kids play this sport, but I would be the one paying for it, taking them to games, training etc, washing the gear etc, therefore i think i am entitled to some say in what they play.
Thankfully at the moment they think triathlons are awesome. And i am happy with that.

more house stuff and sickness too
Posted in home ownership, triathlons on 7:27 PM by Azlemed
so the house saga continues, we put another offer in on tuesday because there was another person offering on it, turns out we are still waiting to find out who gets it due to the owner being away in the army till tonight. so the waiting is driving me batty and to top it off I have another damn uti. I have spent the last 4 days in bed taking panadol and ibuprofen to be even slightly comfortable.
Am really unhappy at being sick as i have only just got over the bout I had at xmas.
In other exciting things, K and I did a triathlon on sunday, we ran/walked 1.5km, biked 6km, and swam 100m. the club here does it in reverse order so that we all arent trying to start in the pool at once. K was brilliant, she rode on her half bike and we averaged 16kph which is good, I ended up with her on my back for the swim which wasnt so great but at least we finished it.

recycling.... biking... tri.....
Posted in biking, clothes swap, recycling, triathlons on 10:54 PM by Azlemed
Yesterday I found a new way to recycle..... online clothes swapping... its a group on flickr and it rocks....
I love the whole concept, its kinda like getting hand me downs as a kid but you get to choose if you like any of it. Its a great way for me to get rid of stuff too which is even better....
its a great way to save $$ and to give clothes a new lease on life.
anyway i am so loving it, its been started by a woman in palmy, and has around 30 members so far, one of whom I went to school with in invers when we were 5.
We biked to the market this morning, all 5 of us, Ben towed O and L in the bike trailer and K rode her halfwheeler behind me, got some yummy fresh veges and had a neat family outting together.
O looked so cute asleep in the trailer on the way home, he was half hidden by his helmet.
Am hoping that this will become a regular thing for us this summer and a good way for me to continue to lose weight and get fitter.... have got a couple of tri's that I want to do so need to do some bike training for that.

ps if you are interested in the clothes swap contact me....
